Preventing substance abuse has come a long way over the last few decades – it’s transitioned from focusing solely on individuals and behavior change to changing the environment to achieve community-level change. Today we know more than ever about what is effective in preventing substance abuse for population-level change. In this workshop, participants will receive an overview of prevention planning (including data sources, assessing community readiness for prevention, and people to involve in the process), examples of evidence-based prevention strategies (and strategies to avoid), and examples of ways to evaluate prevention efforts.
Learning Objectives - Participants will have an understanding of:
Risk and protective factors for substance use
Sources of information and data for prevention planning
The role prevention from the individual to the community level
The importance of environmental prevention
Templates to use in evaluating your work
