Don’t forget, the Regional Center for Healthy Communities will hold its second Open House on April 30 from 3-6 PM.  Join us for refreshments, a tour of our library resources, and a chance to meet our staff.  (Come early at 2:30 for an information session on our recently released RFR – see funding opportunities below.)   

Community News

April is national Sexually Transmitted Infection Testing Month and Planned Parenthood League of Massachusetts is offering discounted, walk-in STI testing at all health center locations in April.  For more information, visit www.pplm.org/gettested

South Shore Hospital will hold a free oral, head, and neck cancer screening on April 27 from 5-7 PM and a free skin cancer screening on May 7 from 5-8 PM at South Shore Hospital, 55 Fogg Rd in South Weymouth.  Appointments are required.  Call 781-340-3756 for oral cancer and 781-240-8652 for skin cancer appointments. 

The Somerville Youth Film Festival will be held on May 6 at 7 PM in the Somerville Theatre in Davis Square featuring short movies, public service announcements, documentaries and new pieces.  Admission is free. 

The Cambridge Prevention Coalition will hold a kick-off for their OPEN (Overdose Prevention & Education Network) project on May 13th 4:00 – 6:30 at the Middle East restaurant in Central Square.  The event is free and open to the public and refreshments will be served.  For more information, contact Mary Amato at 617-349-6346. 

The Esther M. Holderby Award is seeking nominations for community health workers who have overcome adversity to promote health in his/her community.  For complete information, see the attached nomination form called <Holderby CHW Award>.

The Massachusetts Council on Compulsive Gambling is offering an online training (CEUs available) on Developing a Culturally-Conscious Approach to the Prevention and Treatment of Problem Gambling in the Latino Community from April 27 to May 10.   For more information and to register, visit www.masscompulsivegambling.org

The Regional Center for Healthy Communities (Metrowest) has released an RFR for strengthening our work and our communities through mini-grants of up to $4000 to support sharing of best practices, sustainability planning, training, and materials acquisition.  For complete information, visit our website www.healthier-communities.org.  Responses are due May 15 at 5 PM.  We encourage you to attend the information session immediately preceding our Open House on April 30 at 2:30 PM.
