Workshop Description: The prospect of presenting data strikes fear in many hearts, and puts others to sleep. This workshop will demonstrate how data is something we use in our everyday lives, and how working with it can be interesting, and yes, even fun. The workshop will provide an overview of data presentation basics, and give participants techniques, ideas and resources for new, creative, and practical ways to present information. Presenting information is a key activity for mobilizing communities around health-related issues. Preparing effectively for presentations, and having tools for relaying your information in a way that will engage your audience, and keep them awake, will enable you to maximize your impact. This workshop is suitable for adults and young people who work with communities (previous experience with data is not necessary).

Benefits for Participants: You will receive an overview of data basics, including different types of data, things to consider when preparing your data presentation (audience, the politics of data, and things to avoid when presenting data). You will also receive ideas for creative and effective means of data presentation.

Participants will have the opportunity to discuss and get feedback from the trainers and the other group participants on their most relevant and pressing data presentation issue(s).

Before the Workshop:
  • Please come with a data set in mind, ideally one that you are currently using or will be using in the future.
  • Also, when registering, identify the data presentation issue that is most pressing for you at this time.
To register: Participants must register by July 11, 2007. You can register by calling Olga Edmunds at (617) 441 – 0700 x205 or e-mail your name and contact details to oedmunds@healthier-communities.org. In your e-mail, note that you wish to register for the July 19, Got Data? workshop, and include in your email one data presentation issue that you would like to address at the workshop.
